Bat Removal in Houston
Bats (Order Chiroptera)
Bats are unusual animals. After all, they’re the only mammal that can achieve true flight, and that has fascinated humans over the years. It has also terrified us as well. After centuries of stories about how bats are evil, it’s no wonder that people are still afraid of them today. Luckily, ASAP Operators knows just how to handle bat removal jobs.
Habitat and Diet
There are several species of bats that can be found in southeast Texas, but, for the most part, their diet and habitat are the same. The common bats, Mexican Free-tailed Bat (Tadarida brasiliensis), Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus), and the Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) all feed on insects. They will leave their roost just after dusk and just before dawn to hunt. A single bat can eat upwards of 600 insects in a single hour.
When it comes to their roosts, bats will build them in any number of areas. Under bridges, in caves, in palm fronds, and in roofs are all popular roosting spots for the common colonial bats that plague us in southeast Texas.
All bats feel the urge to hibernate during the winter, though, and will seek out warmer places to rest. After hibernation is over, the bats leave for their spring and summer homes to prepare to give birth.
Bat removal is often much more complicated than people understand. Yes, bat droppings (or guano) can be dangerous, but bats themselves are a huge help. They keep insect populations to a minimum, without the need for sprays and pesticides.
If they choose to roost in your home or building, though, then bat removal is necessary. While their guano can be used a fertilizer once treated, it can also contain harmful diseases, bacteria, and fungi. Not only that, but the oils from their fur often stain and discolor anything they come in contact with.
